Aardvark project
Flood Risk Analysis
| Location: Wincanton, UK |
Client: Kingcombe Aquacare Limited
|
| Date: September 2007 |
Sector: Water |

Project Objectives
- To undertake a detailed feasibility report on the proposed scheme in order to determine the design and consent parameters for the project;
- To identify the site of the proposed dam and any houses at potential risk of flooding if breaching occurred;
- To propose an appropriate spillway design.
Delivery
- Aardvark EM Ltd were commissioned by Kingcombe to undertake a design Flood Risk Analysis for the breach of the dam particularly due to overtopping from an extreme flood leading to erosion and failure of the dam surface. This involved studying the river channel downstream of the proposed dam to identify any areas that may have been at risk if the dam were to breach, as well as any effects a breach situation may have.
- Collation of key baseline data on the hydrogeology and hydrology of the proposal site, to include a topographical survey (including cross sections across the site as well as upstream from the lake and below the dam) and soil structural stability test
- Aardvark calculated the design flood criteria, wave allowance and design flood calculation based on CIRIA 161 and ICE Floods and Reservoir Safety. From these calculations the flood routing and spillway design could be assessed and a flood event contingency plan put in place
